Pre-stretched natural leather primary straps with wooden handles for a classical Peak Pilates reformer

Ropes, Leather or Vegan Straps on a Reformer?

Ropes or straps connect a person to the carriage, so they shape how every pulling exercise feels. Peak offers its Artistry reformer with a rope and riser package, leather straps or vegan synthetic straps. Elina's classical 86 in machines use natural leather straps, while its contemporary reformers use ropes. The right choice depends on teaching style and care.

How do rope and riser systems work?

A rope system runs adjustable ropes over pulleys on risers at the head end, with loops or handles clipped to the ends. Peak's Artistry rope package pairs swivel ropes with adjustable risers and neoprene handles. Riser height sets the rope angle, so the pull can be matched to the user's size and the exercise.

Rope quality matters more than it looks. BASI's reformer ropes are 114.5 in long and made from non-stretch fiber. A rope that stretches under load changes the resistance a user feels. It can also stretch unevenly, leaving one side lighter than the other.

End fittings vary as well. Rope assemblies come with safety link connectors or with double-ended clips, so match the fitting to the loops and handles already in use.

What makes leather straps different?

Leather straps are the traditional choice for classical teaching. The leather configuration of Peak's Artistry reformer uses a pair of primary straps 8.5 ft long and 1 in wide, pre-stretched and fully adjustable. Natural leather varies in grain and color from strap to strap. Sheepskin covers can soften contact where a strap crosses the body.

Leather handles follow the same logic. Its leather swivel handles use a hardwood grip that turns with the hand as the arm rotates through an exercise.

Are vegan straps a direct swap for leather?

Not quite. The vegan straps on Peak's Artistry are synthetic leather at 2.4 cm wide, just narrower than the 1 in leather version. They will not work with leather casters, so check the hardware before switching. The matching vegan swivel handles keep a hardwood grip for the same hand position.

Vegan straps suit studios that avoid animal products across their equipment. The Artistry reformer, TWS and Convertible are all offered with a vegan package.

Loops, handles and double loops

Whatever system runs over the pulleys, the loop at the end is what hands and feet actually touch:

  • Cotton webbed foot loops: soft enough against bare skin for a full session.
  • Sheepskin foot loops: a cozier option that takes the place of cotton loops on the reformer and Cadillac.
  • Double loops: one strap carrying a smaller hand loop and a larger foot loop, which saves adjusting the ropes between positions.
  • Neoprene handles: non-porous, which makes wiping them down between clients quick.

Loops wear faster than ropes or straps, so studios often keep a spare pair for each machine. Personal loops and handles are also a simple option for clients who prefer their own.

Which strap system should you choose?

Choose rope and riser for contemporary programming with frequent angle changes. Choose leather for classical teaching on machines built around straps. Choose vegan straps when you want that classical layout without animal products. On the Artistry, the leather configuration also includes the rope and riser package, so a studio can run both.
